Netflix released another teaser for Black Mirror season four, and it is the scariest we’ve seen for the season so far. While the teasers for the season four episodes “Crocodile” and “Arkangel” brought us that classic, Black Mirror-style fear and dread, they weren’t particularly frightening. Of course, terror isn’t always the feeling Black Mirror goes for. Disgust, loathing, dread, angst, sadness? Sure. But terror isn’t necessarily a given in the show, though a few episodes have gone there (like last season’s “Playtest“), and the upcoming season finale “Black Museum” looks to be following suit.
Again, these are teasers, so we can only speculate on what’s really going on here. But as the Independent reports, this episode is about a traveler who “stumbles across a tourist-friendly crime museum with a shocking star attraction.” The trailer doesn’t let us see what the museum’s claim to fame is, but from the looks of the trailer, it takes museum patrons on a dark (and seemingly physically and emotionally painful) journey.
While the teaser definitely gives off some Saw vibes here and there, this unique “criminal museum” really feels reminiscent of the episode “White Bear,” where we see a criminal sentenced to a lifetime of a cruel-yet-poetically-just punishment. Of course, this is all complete speculation, but the masterminds behind Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker and co-producer Annabel Jones, did say in a June 2017 interview that “White Bear” is one they’d considered giving a “sequel episode” to. We’ll have to wait and see if this is indeed a sequel to “White Bear,” or just another frightening journey into the Black Mirror universe. Either way, the episode looks fantastic, and is helmed by The Girl With All the Gifts director Colm McCarthy, so we know it will be chilling and haunting in the best way.
We don’t yet have a release date, but Black Mirror season 4 is set to release on Netflix this year. So make sure your queues are ready! What did you think of the teaser? Do you think it could be a sequel for “White Bear,” or do you think it’s a standalone story? Let’s trade theories in the comments!
