I’m willing to bet that most of you watched Bill Nye the Science Guy as a kid, or have shown it to your own children. A whole generation of people can thank Nye for kick-starting an interest in science and engineering (myself included).
Now, a new documentary launching on Kickstarter is asking for our help to show the world the man behind maybe the most successful science show ever, what his mission is now, and how Nye wants to “change the world.”

Documentary filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg are hoping to raise $650,000 over the next month to get their ambitious project off the ground. They have exclusive access to Nye, and need the money to keep up with him as Nye travels the country participating in debates with climate change deniers, talks with students, manages the Planetary Society (of which he is the CEO), and hangs out with Neil deGrasse Tyson.
In recent years, Nye has left the children’s TV host persona behind in favor of a public presence more akin to friend and mentor Carl Sagan–a vocal advocate and defender of science. When Nye debated creationist Ken Ham last year, he showed us that science isn’t just something in a textbook, it’s a way of thinking that profoundly affects society, something that should be stood up for. Science has the power to “change the world” after all, as Nye loves to say. This is the new Bill Nye, and Alvarado and Sussberg want to show us how the Science Guy has changed.
Backers of The Bill Nye Film will receive everything from credits in the eventual film to a selfie with Nye at a celebration in New York. If you donate $35, you’ll get a bowtie for your dog.
According to the Kickstarter page, filming will begin soon and continue into the fall of 2016, with the film hopefully finished and ready for distribution in 2017.
