Angels we have heard on high have nothing on the cherubic chirping we’re set to experience at the hands of Bill Freakin’ Murray this holiday season. Because the Murray-est Murray to ever Murray in the history of Murrays has agreed to do a Christmas special for TV this year â directed by none other than Sofia Coppola. Oh this is going to get delightfully melancholic and weird.
Murray broke the news to Variety on Monday, explaining that, though the details are still scarce, his intentions to croon us into a Christmas stupor are happening.
“It’s not going to be live,” Murray explained. “We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose. It will have a patina style and wit to it. It will be nice.”
Patina! Music! Style! Texture! Threads! Murray!
All of these things are worth getting excited about, and there’s a budding tingle of excitement at the prospect of Coppola and Murray reuniting â their first outing together since the film Lost in Translation. Considering the fact that Coppola is all about music and texture in her filmmaking, to say nothing of Murray’s charm and wit, this is sure to be something out of another world that’s all at once familiar and vintage, but also super-duper off-kilter.
Coppola confirmed the news â”Weâre working on a Christmas special” â though she had even less to say about it than Murray. “Not sure when it will air, but my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests.” Murray Christmas, one and all.
