Bill Murray Gives David Letterman His Just ‘Desserts’

I remain 100% unapologetic about that pun.

Last night on the penultimate episode of The Late Show with David Letterman, Bill Murray visited Dave and did so by jumping out of a gigantic cake and making a mess of the set. The visit had the sort of panache — or dare I say ganache? — that only he could pull off. (Cake puns FTW!)

Some of you may already know just how special Bill Murray has been to Letterman’s show, but for those of you who don’t: Murray has been the first guest on every iteration of Letterman’s show. The tendency to make a big deal out of the simple things like this has always been a part of the host’s charm, whether it be bits that don’t necessarily always work out or basically making stars out of random normal people like Meg across the street or Dave’s deli pal, Rupert Jee. Having Murray as the eternal first guest wasn’t necessary, but damn if it didn’t become something very special.

Seeing Murray on last night’s episode bookends the series in such a wonderfully bittersweet way. If you watch this and Bill’s other Letterman appearances, you can see the friendship between him and Dave as something absolutely genuine. The interviews were less about each other’s work and more about making friendly digs at each other. Here’s Bill Murray’s very FIRST first Letterman appearance on Late Night with David Letterman (NBC) way back in 1982.

Fantastic! Right!? Let’s keep it going with Murray’s first appearance on the first episode of the Late Show with David Letterman (CBS) in 1993.

So. Damn. Good. We’ll miss interviews like that and we’ll surely miss you, Dave!
