Alright, if you haven’t heard about A Very Murray Christmas then you’ve probably been living under a rather large rock. It’s going to be giant, festive Netflix event with hints of trademark Bill Murray humorâbut it’s also going to about the music of the holidays.
On December 4, Alone on Christmas Day will be released on Amazon to coincide with the special’s release on Netflix. It’s a cheery little 7-inch vinyl created exclusively for this holiday special with an instrumental version on the b-side. Some additional celebrity vocalsâoutside of Phoenixâwill be included on the a-side single, such as Jason Schwartzman (younger cousin to Sofia Coppola, by the way), Letterman’s former musical director Paul Shaffer, and New York Dolls’ David Johansen, a.k.a. Buster Poindexter.
Favorite holiday carols will be sung with bravado as the cast of A-list celebrities unleash their “hidden” musical talents with Murray. And, naturally, the French band Phoenix will be joining in on the fun as onscreen and offscreen support for this special. (I say naturally because the lead singer of Phoenix, Thomas Mars, is married to the director of the special, Sofia Coppola.)
The Coppola-Phoenix partnership goes way back and extends beyond the union of Mars and Coppola, as most of the band’s earlier music videos were directed by Sofia’s brother, Roman Coppola. Many of Sofia Coppola’s films also include the swaying synthpop sounds of this 16-year-old band (We love that “Too Young” dance scene in Lost in Translation).
So, please don’t be left alone this December. Do yourself a favor and buy this special vinyl, watch A Very Murray Christmas on Netflix, and have yourself a very Murray Christmas/holiday month.
