Bill Murray and Phoenix Cover Beach Boys’ “Alone On Christmas Day”

Christmas comes early this year for Bill Murray fans (so… everybody?), thanks to the Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas, which starts streaming today. And if that weren’t enough to make your holiday a ho ho ho hole in one, Murray and French rock band Phoenix have also teamed up as a duet to cover the Beach Boys’ hidden holiday classic, “Alone on Christmas Day”.

The song—which is available for purchase as a 7″ vinyl or through digital services like iTunes, with all proceeds going to Unicef—has a definitive holiday feel even though the lyrics can be a bit dreary (“Why the sadness, when there should be gladness? Keep movin’ on”), and is ideal for something like roasting chestnuts over an open fire or playing Fallout 4 in your underwear and a santa cap. The track also features Jason Schwartzman, Paul Schaffer (former David Letterman musical frontman), and New York Dolls’ David Johansen, because who in their right mind would say no to laying down some sonic holiday goodness with Bill Murray?

As for the Netflix special, it’s a Sofia Coppola joint, and stars, along with the eponymous legend, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Jenny Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Chris Rock, Schwartzman, Maya Rudolph and, wait for it… George Clooney. The plot of the special, which of course allows for plenty of singing, revolves around Murray worrying that nobody will show up to do his TV special because of a massive snowstorm that’s hit New York City. And, spoiler alert, his guests do somehow find a way to get to him because miracles happen when Bill Murray is involved, it’s a fact.

What do you think of Murray and Phoenix’s cover? Is it as good as the original? What level of storm would you brave to sing a Christmas carol with the Murr-man himself? Let us know in the comments below!
