BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA Comic Series Coming This June From BOOM! Studios

If you grew up in the eighties and had cable television, there were certain movies that were perpetually on a loop on stations like TBS and USA: movies like Poltergeist, Grease 2, Mannequin and John Carpenter’s now classic Big Trouble in Little China.  Originally a box office bomb when it hit theaters in 1986, Big Trouble went on to become a cult classic, thanks to VHS and the endless cable showings, and is beloved (and quoted) by many a film nerd to this day. Starring Kurt Russell as truck driver Jack Burton (reuniting with his Escape from New York director Carpenter), the movie centers around Burton’s quest to help his friend Wang Chi rescue his fiancee from bandits in San Francisco’s Chinatown. They travel to the underworld beneath Chinatown, where they ultimately face an ancient sorcerer. Fun fact: the movie also starred a pre-Sex and the City Kim Cattrall.

Starting this June, BOOM! Studios will continue the adventures of Jack Burton and the Pork Chop Express in Big Trouble in Little China, a new, ongoing series from comics creators Eric Powell (The Goon) and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun). Not only are these two über fans of the movie involved in bringing it to life via comic book form, but BOOM! has the film’s director, John Carpenter, working with Powell to give this continuation the official seal of approval.

According to BOOM! Studios Editor-In-Chief Matt Gagnon, “It’s already been a rewarding journey bringing ol’ Jack Burton back for new adventures and we’re just barely getting started; I have fond memories of watching Big Trouble, cracking up at Jack Burton and his plight. I always thought there were so many more stories to tell with that character and the world he inhabits. So putting together the amazing team of Eric and Brian for this series, along with the guidance of John Carpenter, has been a dream come true. Now everybody can truly relax. Jack’s here.”
