This is one of those “Oh, yeah, of course!” stories that come out every once in awhile. The winner of the 2015 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Disney‘s Big Hero 6, was all about kids coming together and using using science, their own bravery and ingenuity, and a lot of colorful armor to form a new super hero team. So, naturally, what would the next step be for a property like that? Why, a weekly animated series of course! Disney has announced that TV adventures of Baymax, Hiro, Fred, Go Go, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi will begin airing on Disney XD in 2017.

It truly seems like a no-brainer to me. One of the more adventurous animated films to come out of Disney in a long time, and one about a superhero team no less—loosely based on a Marvel comic property—has “continuing adventures” written all over it. And it’s not like Disney doesn’t have a track record for this; an animated Aladdin series was commissioned following the success of the 1992 film and its follow-up direct-to-video sequel, lasting 86 episodes. And Disney has continued this trend with other films, like The Lion King and Hercules. They’re even doing it with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy currently.

The Big Hero 6 animated series will be executive produced by Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, who have a pretty heroic history in animation themselves, having created the 2002 adventure hit Kim Possible. Disney Channel Worldwide president Gary Marsh said of the new series, “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and Baymax — can deliver.”

With great characters, an aim to get kids interested in science, and the creative power of the Kim Possible team on board, I can’t see any reason why this wouldn’t be an excellent show. The only question is whether they’d be able to get the same voice cast. It’d probably be difficult to get Damon Wayans, Jr or T.J. Miller these days, but can you even imagine Baymax without Scott Adsit?! The secret handshake just wouldn’t be the same.
