Bhi Bhiman Gets WHIPLASH’d by Keegan-Michael Key in MOVING TO BRUSSELS

If the Oscar-winning film Whiplash has taught us anything, it’s to be very afraid of screaming, bald music teachers. Sure, you might eventually give the best performance of your life, but at what a cost? And as frightening as J.K. Simmons was, it’s conceivable Keegan-Michael Key is even scarier. In the new video by blues musician Bhi Bhiman, called “Moving to Brussels,” Key assumes the mantle of Bhiman’s drill sergeant-like mentor/tormentor, something which he already proved he could do very well in Pitch Perfect 2.

The video hits all the notes (if you’ll pardon the pun, or even if you won’t) with regard to Whiplash, including Key making Bhiman prove his guitar prowess (yes, it’s drums in the movie, don’t yell at me), telling him he isn’t at the right tempo, telling from a second of singing that it’s “Horseshit,” and even stopping the song in the middle to continue the berating. And, for the love of all things holy, we get a cascade of spittle being hurled at Bhiman’s face, like he’s having a misty shvitz. Is it more gross than playing guitar until your fingers bleed and having blood spatter on instruments as though we’re watching some old samurai movie’s arterial blood spray? I think it’s a toss-up, don’t you?

“Moving to Brussels” is a really lovely song, even without the Key interruptions, and evokes a lot of the new-wave blues rock we’ve been hearing a lot lately, for the better. Has sort of a lower-fi Black Keys vibe; does anyone else get that? The song is on the new album Rhythm & Reason which has been released on iTunes today, May 18. It’s a pretty stellar release if you ask us.

Would you liked to get screamed at by Keegan-Michael Key? Or do you just want to jam out to Bhi Bhiman’s newest? Let us know below!
