Bette Midler Covered TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’? We Were Not Expecting That

Bette Midler, Queen of All the Good-Time Broads, has really thrown us for a loop today. Granted we are generally pro-everything the Divine Ms. M does, but this? This cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls”? It’s unexpected, but we’re not sure if that’s a good thing in this case. Conflicting feelings, we see, hear, and feel you, is what we’re saying.

I have nary a bad thing to say about Bette Midler. She—along with Liza Minnelli—are lifestyle spirit guides, to this particular writer at least. I mean — HELLO! And, true story: I may or may not have performed this song as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes during my fourth grade talent show (and yes there is  video, no you cannot see it. My rap skills were just too on-point as a 10-year-old white girl from Connecticut. The Internet would implode). So, you know, I know a thing or two.

But this? This is just…kinda/sorta confounding.

Right?

We’re not sure if it’s bad or good—it just sort of exists. Are we living in an alternative universe thanks to Winifred’s spell (that she put on you: now you’re hers—spoiler alert!)? Has she gone amok with power, convinced every idea is a good idea? Does it make us a disloyal follower of Ms. M if we’re just generally “meh” on it?

Let us know what you think in the comments.

For a remake it isn’t bad. Does it have the same appeal that the original version did? No, but it’saesthetically pleasing to ears. I’ve definitely heard worse remakes. I’d give it a thumb and a half up.
