Beta’d: It’s “The Elder Scrolls Online” Trailer!

The prospect of stealing sweetrolls from all across Tamriel with hordes of other player characters is pretty enticing, but if The Elder Scrolls Online looks half as good as this new trailer, then we’ll be there on Day 1 ready to punch a mudcrab in the face. The video showcases the three alliances in the game – the Aldmeri Dominion, Daggerfall Covenant, and Ebonheart Pact – who will be waging bloody  war for control of the Imperial City. Can’t wait to dive headfirst into a civil war for the fate of Tamriel?

Zenimax and Bethesda Softworks are currently taking applications for the beta, so see if your Luck score is up to the task.

^ Except that, on its own, that Old Republic trailer might be the coolest Star Wars thing made in the past ten years.

Anyway, I just… I hate MMO’s, on principle alone. I hate myself when I’m playing MMO’s. MMO’s cause you to set aside everything you’ve learned about what makes a well-made immersive game (you know, suspension of disbelief… not having little labels over peoples’ heads… not seeing dumb people in a chat box in the corner… COLLISION DETECTION), and when I play one, I spend more time playing it than I spend on any other well-made, immersive game. I feel like I’ve given in to a con.

As much as I love TES lore-wise, I just wish I could play one of these in single-player, on the existing engine, to explore Tamriel that way. I’d take all the bugs in the world, if it meant that it was a single-player (or AT LEAST just co-op multiplayer) game.

I have the same thoughts about this trailer as I did the first Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer: *yawn* wake me when they release game play. The trailer is really cool, but it’s not game play, so it doesn’t mean anything other than they spent money on a cool trailer.

    Get over it.

CEO: “I don’t get it. It’s the first day of TES Online sales. Why don’t I have a second yacht yet?”
CFO: “Because no one’s buying the game.”
CEO: “But that doesn’t make sense. The PC and Mac users love us.”
CFO: “Those guys DID love us. But they boycotted us because of all the DLC for Skyrim releasing first to 360.”
    CEO: “I don’t understand…”
CFO: “Without the PC and Mac fans to sell to, no one can buy this game.”
    CEO: “…”
    CFO: “…”
CEO: “In hindsight, taking all that Microsoft money was probably a poor decision.”
    CFO: “Yeah…”
