Benedict Cumberbatch Is Officially Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE

After what seems like months of speculation and non-committal answers from just about everyone involved, it seems Marvel Studios has finally closed the deal for Benedict Cumberbatch to play title character Stephen Strange in the big screen version of Doctor Strange. Scheduled to arrive in theaters November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) with Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) writing the screenplay. The movie will stick close to the classic Stan Lee/Steve Ditko origin for the character, which follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

In a press release from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Fiege, he said, “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity; In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.” Cumberbatch is already a huge darling of fanboys and fangirls everywhere, thanks to his role on the BBC’s Sherlock, as well as his work as Smaug in the Hobbit movies and Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. He’s currently in theaters portraying Alan Turing in the movie The Imitation Game.

Doctor Strange opens up a whole new world for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has already explored mythology with Thor, outer space with Guardians of the Galaxy, and more ground level style heroics with Iron Man and Captain America. Doctor Strange will introduce audiences to a world of magic and sorcery, something that up until now, hasn’t been seen in the Marvel movie-verse (all the magic in Thor being “high science” so to speak). I personally can’t wait to hear all those gobbledygook spells and nonsense words muttered with beautiful gravitas by Mr. Cumberbatch.

Please be good, please be good, please be good. I’ve waited too many years for it to be bad! I’ve no real issue with Mr. Cumberbatch, but he doesn’t need to be in everything I love, does he? Let’s hope that Disney/Marvel are willing to spend the money necessary to make the wondrous, magic filled movie we’ve been waiting for.
