Benedict Cumberbatch Brings the Drama in Mad Lib Theater

Call us biased if you must, but we think Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the greatest actors in movies and television today. With such intensity and gravitas in every word he utters, the ‘batch truly brings a new level of class and professionalism to the art form. Though he’s played many great roles like Hamlet, Sherlock Holmes, and Alan Turing, his greatest role to date has got to be his breathtaking performance as Detective Rory on Jimmy Fallon‘s Mad Lib Theater.

On The Tonight Show, Fallon and Cumberbatch teamed up to craft a Mad Lib-created script for an intense crime drama, complete with riveting Boston-ish accents. The resulting performance was a hard-hitting look at Macy’s egg theft over Hanukkah, gyrating thieves with a hidden Ukrainian heritage, and a badger’s potential as a domesticated companion for law enforcement officers.

Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating a bit when I say it’s “hard-hitting.” Regardless, it’s pretty hilarious—neither are able to keep a straight face throughout the skit (not that unusual for Fallon, but still). In fact, I dare say that once Benedict Cumberbatch finally takes his final bow as Sherlock forever, Detective Rory and Mrs. Tate (the Ukrainian ex-egg thief with a heart of gold) could have a real future solving crimes together, right? Of course, Cumberbatch will have to get a better grasp on saying “Rory” if that’s gonna happen…

So while we wait for the director’s cut of Detective Rory and the Macy’s Egg Heist where we see an alternate cut of Mrs. Tate dropping an f-bomb, let’s settle in and watch this skit a few dozen more times.

Did you like Benedict Cumberbatch’s run on Mad Lib Theater? What was your favorite part? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
