Last week, Nerdist News ran an episode wondering if DC Entertainment is trying to make the Ben Affleck incarnation of Batman the “Iron Man of the DC extended universe.” After a recent screening of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice for cast and crew, it seems that speculation is leaning more towards fact.
According to a report from Den of Geek, the screening was a massive success, even leading to a standing ovation for director Zack Snyder. This lead WB executives, who were extremely impressed with the performance of Affleck as Bruce Wayne to offer him more that just the one movie he is slated to direct and star in. Apparently, we will now see “Batfleck” in a TRILOGY of standalone Batman films. Along with Suicide Squad and the Justice League Films, we will be seeing this version of Batman for at least the next 10 years.
This would solidify him as DC’s answer to the Armored Avenger, as Robert Downey, Jr. has played Tony Stark/Iron Man since 2008, and will continue to do so through at LEAST 2019’s Avengers: Infinity War Part II (I feel that will be his last time in the role, but that’s still four years away).
This will also be the longest anyone has consistently played a DC character in a cinematic form. Tom Welling still holds the record for television, playing Clark Kent for 10 seasons on Smallville.
So many questions remain as to what we can expect over the next 10 years. Who will we see from the Rogues’ Gallery? Will any other Bat-Family members make an appearance? We’ve seen from the current trailer that the character of Robin in some form exists in this universe. Will we finally get to see a version of the Dynamic Duo that isn’t cringe worthy?
So what do you think? Are you excited at the prospect of even more Batfleck in the foreseeable future? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
