Few movie monsters are as iconic as the Bride of Frankenstein. With just a scant few minutes of screen time in the finale of her eponymous 1935 film (directed by Frankenstein mastermind James Whale), the haunting visage of the patchwork princess, as conceived by Mary Shelley and portrayed by actress Elsa Lanchester, has become almost as famous as that of her would-be mate, played by Boris Karloff. And, at last weekend’s Son of Monsterpalooza, held annually in Burbank, the Bride was the star of a most unusual bridal show. For the “It’s Alive” Project (presented by Mucklebones LLC), artists were invited to create a new look for the Bride, and to say the resulting eighty busts and ten full-size statues are inspiring is putting it mildly.

Starting with a uniform sculpt of Lanchester’s head in the Frankenstein sequel (regarded by many as the best of the Universal Monster movies), an army of the country’s best creature creators let their imaginations run wild, unleashing a flood of imaginative artworks. I was fortunate enough to attend and captured many of the most eye-popping Brides in the gallery below. Here you’ll see the Bride as Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas, as Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty, and as Harley Quinn in DC Comics. There’s an amphibious Bride, a botanical Bride, a Borg bride, a Medusa Bride, and a Lady Liberty Bride. There’s a Bride that gives new meaning to the word “bridezilla.” There’s even a Bride that looks like an ice cream cone. (And a few that defy description altogether.)
