The hype train keeps on a-rollin’ as the release of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake draws nearer and nearer. Ahead of the film’s March 17 US debut, the world is still itching for more details and sneak peeks, and today, we’ve gotten one. We’ve already seen Luke Evans as the machismo Gaston, and along with his on-screen partner Josh Gad (who plays Gaston’s sidekick LeFou) and composer Alan Menken, he sang his character’s titular song at a recent press conference (via Entertainment Weekly).
With Menken on piano, the three go back and forth on the song together, and the song features lyrics by Howard Ashman, who wrote song lyrics for Disney’s animated original version of the story. A YouTube commenter transcribed them thusly:
Who plays darts like Gaston?
Who breaks hearts like Gaston?
Whoâs much more than the sum of his parts like Gaston?I needed encouragement, thank you, LeFou
Well thereâs no one as easy to bolster as youWhen I hunt I sneak up with my quiver
And the beasts on the field say a prayer
First I carefully aim for the liver
Then I shoot from behind (Is that fair?) I donât care!Who has brains like Gaston, entertains like Gaston?
Who can make up these endless refrains like Gaston?
Another commenter noted that this rendition of the song gets rid of the lyric, “And every last inch of me’s covered with hair,” which could definitely be considered risque by today’s standards. So, what do you think of the performance? Are you down with the new lyrics? Excited about the movie? If you want our opinion, we saw it already and thought it was wonderful.
