Earlier this month, the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice debuted, and it officially unveiled the presence of one of Supermanâs greatest villains. Batman v Superman designer Patrick Tatopoulos has gone on the record about the villain in question while confirming fan rumors about his origin in the film. Needless to say, there are SPOILERS AHEAD! Youâve been warned!
Still with us? Good.
Because the villain is Doomsday, the unstoppable alien brute who killed Superman in the comics.
But in Batman v Superman, Doomsday is born from the death of Supermanâs first adversary in this world, General Zod (Michael Shannon).
âWe see how [Doomsday] evolves as part of Lexâs plan to protect the world,â said Tatopoulos during an interview with French Premiere. âSeeing the Superman we know, be gone, and then replaced with this reproduction is really going to make fans think of how we look at these super beings. It was especially interesting to figure out, how would you create Superman from Zod⦠then how would that involve into Doomsday.â
However, Tatopoulos was quick to note that this wonât simply be an adaptation of the âDeath of Supermanâ storyline that introduced Doomsday to the DC Universe.
âDoomsday is an evolution essentially⦠Fans may be aware of the âDeath of Supermanâ story, but this is handled in such a new way,â related Tatopoulos. âWhen the film is called Batman v Superman it really has a lot of levels to the meaning. Superman isnât just killed off at the end of something.â
Tatopoulos also sought to allay fears that the most recent Batman v Superman trailer gave away too much about the film.
âThe timeframe of how things fall into place will surprise fans,â said Tatopoulos. âDoomsday isnât just the final act. Those feeling they may know too much this early are going to be in for a true surprise.â
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
