Badger’s “Breaking Bad” Star Trek Speech, Animated

If you watched the first of the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad on Sunday night, you know that there was a goofy interlude in which Badger broke out his own peculiar version of Star Trek fan fiction to a rapt Skinny Pete while Jesse marinates in his own misery. That turns out to be a story Vince Gilligan has been telling his writing staff for a while now, and Peter Gould appropriated it for Badger’s speech. It was just begging for an animated treatment, and New York Magazine’s Vulture site has come through, offering Matt Czap’s version of the soliloquy.

Vulture also has some background on the scene, including how the debate between Badger and Skinny Pete was lifted from a conversation about the Enterprise’s transporter between Gould and fellow writer Gennifer Hutchison, and Matt Jones and Charles Baker, who say they’re “moderate” Trek fans, discussing how some of the material they were performing went over their heads and how the scene is really Aaron Paul’s, even though he just sits there saying nothing and ultimately walking out. Great behind-the-scenes stuff worth a read. So do that.

Don’t miss the Nerdist Podcast with Vince Gilligan, Bryan Cranston, and Aaron Paul, and our coverage of Breaking Bad at Comic-Con 2013. And, of course, the cast of Breaking Bad on Chris Hardwick’s All-Star Celebrity Bowling
