We may be just a few days away from the premiere of the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer, but Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige is already looking even further ahead. In the massive Marvel cover story for the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Feige hints that there are an additional 20 movies planned after the currently untitled fourth Avengers movie hits in 2019. More intriguingly, Feige openly said that Avengers 4 will “bring things you’ve never seen in a superhero film: a finale.” Today’s Nerdist News is borrowing the Time Stone to unpack Feige’s remarks and track the future of the MCU.

Remember, Avengers 4 was once going to be Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, before the powers-that-be (including Feige) decided to change it. One of the reasons that it still doesn’t have a title is that the name itself is supposedly a spoiler. Something like The New Avengers would give away the fact that Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor may not be around the MCU for much longer.
Keep in mind, there were many in Hollywood who doubted that Marvel would ever get this far with its own film. But nearly ten years after Iron Man hit theaters, the long-term contracts for most of the OG heroes are almost up. Chris Evans has made no secret about his desire to focus on directing, while Robert Downey Jr. makes an ungodly amount of money for his Marvel films, thanks to some shred negotiating and very good luck. Chris Hemsworth seemed to be rejuvenated by Thor: Ragnarok‘s wackiness, and we’re hoping Scarlett Johansson won’t take off without getting a movie of her own.
But if they all leave, where does that leave the billion dollar Avengers franchise? That’s where the new group of heroes come in. Between Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, there should be enough star power to keep the Avengers together. Marvel’s comic book universe has also set up potential successors for Thor, Cap, and Iron Man—which probably means that the iconic heroes will remain even if the actors leave. Even then, we suspect that Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and the original Thor will never truly be finished in the MCU. If death couldn’t claim them in the comic book realm, then they should always have a place on the big screen.
