5 Animated Ideas for an AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Reboot That Are Better Than Live-Action

It’s not hard to understand the mixed reaction to Netflix’s announcement it is developing a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender reboot. Fans already think both the original animated series and its spinoff The Legend of Korra are perfect, and we’re still not over M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 live-action film. No one wants to see another stain on the franchise. However, the show’s creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have signed on as producers, and Netflix said it will be more of a “reimagining” than a straight remake, which is an exciting possibility. But if they want to bring back a beloved animated series, why go live-action when there are so many amazing possibilities for a new cartoon? On this week’s Animation Investigation host Hector Navarro has five ideas that would be even better.

Who wouldn’t be thrilled if they simply continued the series? There’s so much fertile earth there to bend, or they could just adapt the great graphic novels. And is there a single fan who doesn’t want more Kyoshi? What about a big jump in time, either forwards or backwards? With such a rich world spanning such a long period, both the past and the future offer tantalizing possibilities.

Of course they could always do our best idea: an anthology series, which would allow them to do all of our ideas. We could visit different time periods, meet different Avatars, and it can all be done in different visual styles. Everything except live-action, that is.

Which of these ideas are you most excited by? Tell us in the comments below which ‘toon you’d want to see.
