Antonio Banderas’s new movie Automata has released a trailer, and it will have you eyeing your Roomba and wondering if it is looking back more than you have ever wondered before. The sci-fi thriller, due out in limited release October 10th, is set in a dystopian near-future as humans stretch Earth’s resources to the limit and robots are on the brink of stepping into the evolutionary light.

Perhaps we’ve seen The Matrix too many times, but tell us you didn’t ask if the robots were the ones to burn the sun before that was finished! With dystopia at the forefront of film choices these last few years, Automata looks like it could be a new twist on the tale of human struggle and social acceptance.

We are excited to see the evil-looking suited cohort who view healing and/or improving other robots as the start of an “epidemic”. There is also an intriguing snippet of trailer here where it appears the robots not only rescue Banderas’s character, but are fleeing a city and people they know will not let them continue to live as they are. Will this have you considering the humanity of creatures without homo sapiens roots to rely on? Already we’re hearing it compared to Planet of the Apes…but for robots.

Banderas, who also acted as a producer on the film, said in a recent Reddit AMA, “…[I]t’s a very reflective philosophical science fiction, going back to the science fiction I love, like Isaac Asimov. That’s the type of movie we tried to do,” indicating a return to classic nitty-gritty sci-fi. While the robots range from downtrodden low-end models to sleek and sophisticated humanoid droids, we appreciate the disparity shown between modernity and pollution, and poverty and wealth.

Starring alongside Banderas and the robots are Melanie Griffith, Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen. It was written and directed by Gabe Ibáñez.  Make sure you see Automata this October. You may just want to go as a robot for Halloween.
