ATTACK THE BLOCK Director On Tap to Captain STAR TREK 3?

This is a promotion we’re very excited about. With J.J. Abrams out as director of Paramount and Skydance’s third installment of the Star Trek reboot, what with him heading to a galaxy far, far away and all, it seems they’ve gone to the world of indie British sci-fi for a replacement, and a good one too.

Deadline is reporting (not confirmed, but likely) that the mountain studio is looking at Joe Cornish, the writer-director of 2011’s fantastic hoodies-versus-aliens movie, Attack the Block. Cornish is known in the UK for his long-running comedy and radio duo Adam and Joe, along with fellow comedian Adam Buxton who had their own program on Channel 4, The Adam and Joe Show from 1996-2001, and have hosted on XFM and BBC Radio 6Music.

Cornish also co-wrote Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin with writing partner Edgar Wright from a script by Steven Moffat, and Cornish will again pair with Wright to create the screenplay for Wright’s upcoming Ant-Man for Marvel Studios.

He’s certainly got the chops and the street cred, and it’s very nice to see a big studio giving a huge franchise to a talented guy with only a few, albeit impressive, credits. If this turns out to be true, I’ll definitely be interested to see what Cornish does with Star Trek. Maybe they’ll actually trek the stars next time.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below. And please, if you haven’t, check out Attack the Block. It’s brilliant.
