When your stress level is at its peak, nothing can really take the edge off quite like smashing the heck out of something. Like a child throwing a tantrum, the pure satisfaction of destroying an object may not solve problems, but it definitely makes you feel a whole lot better.

Artist Mar Cuervo has channeled her aggression by creating an art project called “Destroyer,” where she takes pristine edible objects and, quite simply, destroys them. Immaculate pink cookies, crumbled. Perfect Pop Tarts, oblivion. That smiling chocolate Easter Bunny? Sorry, he’s a goner. All of these glorious treats sit peacefully on plates not realizing their shelf life is about to come to a catastrophic end.

Cuervo’s collection of smashed food gifs are mesmerizing. About the project, she speaks of their “…softness and fragility. They were screaming to be destroyed” and watching her crush their beautifully perfect shapes into bits is oddly satisfying. Seeing cupcakes and cookies being crushed over and over gives a sense of liberation, like you’re rising up against the patriarchy, doing what you want to do, no regrets, complete and total freedom! Or maybe it just looks like a really good time.

My favorite of the Destroyer gifs is the annihilation of the hot dog buns. How many times have I stood in the bread aisle just staring at those buns and wanting to do the same. Maybe it’s because there are 8 buns in a package while the companion hot dogs are sold in a 10 pack. Let’s face it, that’s enough to push anyone over the edge.
