Warning: this recap contains major spoilers from this week’s episode of Arrow, “Vigilante.” This is a recap, after all! Don’t say we didn’t warn you …

When Oliver was forced to hold a mirror up to his own vigilante history, he didn’t like what he saw. But it did give him a renewed sense of purpose, so maybe Arrow‘s debut of iconic DC Comics antihero Vigilante in Star City was exactly what he needed! Especially since it looks like one of his own proteges might be swayed to the dark side with none other than Prometheus. Whoa. Let’s get to recapping “Vigilante,” shall we?

Vigilante has arrived in Star City, and he’s killing sex traffickers to save the girls being sold against their will. Is that really so bad? Should he be stopped, or should he be allowed to keep on keeping on with his vendetta? That’s what Team Arrow debated when he first showed up on the scene in this week’s episode. Oliver, of course, didn’t want to let a serial killer stay free to keep killing on the streets, but others like Felicity thought what he was doing was actually good for the city. And Artemis thought it was quite hypocritical for Oliver to be judging any other vigilante killer, which of course, she was right about. But Oliver’s word was law, so they suited up and tried to stop this new Vigilante from killing any more criminals when a new bank robbing crew started hitting Star City banks.

Team Arrow split up to get information on this new Vigilante, but when Diggle started to lose it during questioning he confessed to Curtis and Rene that he wasn’t able to go to his son’s second birthday because of his fugitive status and it was tearing him up. Aw, Daddy Diggle is my favorite kind of Diggle! It’s time for Team Arrow to prioritize clearing his name, stat. He doesn’t deserve to be separated from his son like this. (And does anyone else still feel so weird talking about Dig’s son as if he never had a daughter? I miss baby Sara.)

When Team Arrow finally came face-to-face with Vigilante, he gave them a warning: If they’re not with him then they’re against him, and he won’t hold back in fighting them. While Rene remarked that he sounded just like Oliver, Oliver wasn’t a fan of someone doing the same work as he did but not under his control. He believed someone like Vigilante was out there and the bank robbers were still running free all because what he had been trying to do as Green Arrow for four years wasn’t working, no matter the fact that he’s saved the city 10 times over “at least,” according to Felicity and Diggle. Maybe he wasn’t strict enough, and Vigilante was actually in the right.

After D.A. Adrian Chase got a location for the criminal leader of the bank robbers out of one that the SCPD had arrested, Oliver suited up as Green Arrow and found him at a motel. But Vigilante showed up and started shooting right away. Oliver got the leader into protective custody safely, and the rest of Team Arrow finally agreed that they needed to stop Vigilante after he set a fire that hurt innocent people.

Meanwhile, reporter Susan Williams, dropping hints about Russia in front of Oliver, wanted answers about the bodies dropped on the SCPD doorstep, and also a drink with Oliver himself. She offered to be his friend, not his date, but I think we all know she really just wants her story about Oliver’s time in Russia. Don’t trust her, Ollie! This has “bad idea” written all over it. But he still went for it, taking a break from Team Arrow to do it, no less. He actually confided in her about him feeling ineffective (as the mayor and not as Green Arrow, of course) and she actually helped him realize he just needed to go about things in the right way and not worry about what anyone else is doing. Wait… maybe she could actually be good for him? Only if she doesn’t expose his deepest, darkest secrets. That might be too much to ask, though, given her history with the Queens already.

Oliver had to leave his “friend date” early, however, when Team Arrow staged a bank robbery to draw out Vigilante. Watching Felicity pretend to be a criminal was hilarious. At least Wild Dog was used to wearing a mask! Vigilante showed up and attacked Mr. Terrific and Artemis until Green Arrow showed up, and he tried to threaten Team Arrow into leaving him alone and letting him do his work, but Green Arrow managed to get the upper hand and tied him up. And before Oliver could unmask Vigilante (or “Ski Goggles,” as Curtis dubbed him), he got away. So close, and yet so far.

After Thea found out Quentin had never been on the wagon and was still drinking, he was so ashamed that he turned in his letter of resignation for Deputy Mayor. She refused to accept him giving up, though, and when she showed up at his place he confessed that the past few times he blacked out, he woke up with blood on his hands … and a Prometheus throwing star on his table. He thought he was damaged goods, and didn’t think he should be close to Thea or the mayor or anyone else. She decided to bring him to rehab to help him deal with his drinking as well as help him with his continued grief over Laurel, which he hadn’t even started to get over. She helped him realize this was the best choice for him, and he agreed.

Later, Thea finally confessed to Oliver all about Quentin’s struggles, and that Prometheus was going to a lot of trouble to mess with Quentin’s head. That lead both of them to realize that the only reason why Prometheus was even targeting Quentin was because he might know that Oliver is the Green Arrow. Ding ding ding! Right on the first guess.

But in happier news, Rene helped plan another birthday party for John Jr. along with Lyla in Diggle’s new hideout, and it was the sweetest thing ever. The smile on Diggle’s face was just so heartwarming! This Rene/Dig friendship is quickly becoming the best thing about this show. What’s not so great is the fact that Artemis might be working with Prometheus. That’s right: Oliver’s new protégé met up with the masked serial killer on a rooftop in the final moments of the hour, and smirking, told him that no one followed her or suspected a thing. Is she actually with Prometheus?! What is happening?!

And in this week’s flashback storyline, Oliver and Konstantin Kovar (welcome to the Arrow-verse, Dolph Lundgren!) finally had their first face-to-face meeting. After a week of questioning and torture, Kovar still got no information from him, so he figured it was time for a different approach. He threatened Taiana’s mother after he heard Oliver screaming Taiana’s name and so Oliver swiftly grabbed a knife, stabbed Kovar in the hand and tried to threaten him right back, but he failed miserably. After Kovar bloodied him up brutally, Oliver was destroyed when he then learned that the Bratva made a deal with Kovar behind his back. Can he not trust his new brothers?!
