ARCHIE is Going To Become a Bollywood Musical

Aside from the Josie and the Pussycats movie, the Archie Comics characters have never received their own feature film. Now, the Archies are finally getting their chance for stardom on the big screen in the most unexpected way possible: as a Bollywood musical.

Via Variety, Archie Comics has joined forces with Graphic India to produce a Bollywood-style live-action film featuring the classic characters Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Jughead, and more, all portrayed by Indian performers.

What’s especially notable about this project is that it will be the first American comic book to receive an official adaption by India’s film industry. The Archie comics have been published in India and other countries around the world, so the international appeal of the characters has already been well-established. Music has also been an important part of the Archies for decades, so the idea of a Bollywood musical isn’t that far-fetched.

Within the past decade, Archie Comics has made great strides in its quest to reinvent the characters that remained unchanged for most of their existence. The comic book line was given a modern reboot, while adding horror titles including Afterlife with Archie, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vampironica, and Jughead: The Hunger. The CW’s Riverdale has also breathed new life into the characters, and we’re very curious to see how the Bollywood movie compares to its TV counterpart.
