AQUAMAN Movie Will Feature Nasty Villains the Trench

AQUAMAN Movie Will Feature Nasty Villains the Trench

We’re all very excited for Warner Bros and DC‘s Wonder Woman to come out in a few weeks. It’ll be the first time the character will get her own time to shine on the big screen, and we’re stoked to see Themyscira in all its glory. But the DC Universe has got many, many more unique kingdoms and species to discover, and it seems like all of them are being put into James Wan‘s Aquaman in 2018. We’re already going to see Atlantis in all its underwater Westerosi glory, but we’ll evidently also be seeing rival kingdom the Trench.

According to Superhero News (and shared via ScreenRant), the movie will find Jason Momoa‘s Arthur Curry facing off against not only Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and the rebellious Atlantean King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren), but also tangling with “bipedal humanoids with arm, legs, fins, big heads, big eyes and very sharp teeth.” This sounds fishily (ha ha ha) like the Trench, a monstrous aquatic race, and one of the three undersea kingdoms, who were introduced in Aquaman Vol. 7 #1 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis (i.e., the first issue of The New 52 Aquaman).

Aquaman-trench-1

The Trench were an integral part of the “Throne of Atlantis” storyline and both began and ended Johns’ time on the title, which saw it become revitalized as one of the top DC ongoing series of the post-“Flashpoint” continuity. And in them, with their gnarly teeth and walleyes, the Aquaman movie can gain a visibly threatening soldier-level foe to fight, and since Aquaman already has two for-sure baddies plus his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) who’ll likely turn evil at some point, the underwater battles will be copious.

Now, this isn’t an official announcement of the Trench, but as early as 2014, they’d been rumored to be included:

We’d definitely bet on seeing man-sized fish monsters when Aquaman hits theaters on December 21, 2018!
