AQUAMAN Movie Gets New Screenwriter

Right now, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are gearing up production for two of their follow-ups to Batman v SupermanWonder Woman and Justice League: Part One are scheduled to begin production within the next couple of months in the UK. But Warner Bros. has another big movie DC in the months following: the first ever solo film featuring underwater hero Aquaman, starring former Game of Thrones Dothraki Jason Momoa in the title role. Last year it was announced that Furious 7 and The Conjuring director James Wan would be taking the helm, but we haven’t heard much else since then.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Warner Brothers has enlisted writer David Leslie Johnson to pen a new script for the King of Atlantis’ solo debut. Previously, Warner Bros. hired Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad to write separate scripts for Aquaman, with a decision on which script to use to come much later. Beall had previously written a draft for a Justice League movie that was apparently tossed out when Zack Snyder took on the project.

Whether or not David Leslie Johnson will work from ideas within those two scripts or start from scratch is still a mystery. Johnson’s previous writing credits include Little Red Riding Hood and Wrath of the Titans for Warner Bros., though neither of those movies were all that good. However, he does have an episode of The Walking Dead to his credit. He’s also working with future Aquaman director James Wan already — he’s the writer for the upcoming The Conjuring 2.

Not much else is known about the Aquaman movie right now, although this week a rumor surfaced that Aquaman’s wife, Queen Mera, would be debuting in Justice League: Part One. That would almost certainly mean she’s slated to be a big part of Aquaman’s solo film as well. Aquaman has a July 27, 2018 release date.
