Breaking Down AQUAMAN’s First Official Details

Comic-Con is only a few days away, and it looks like this year’s convention is going full Aquaman! Director James Wan is expected to drop the first trailer for Jason Momoa‘s first solo outing as the king of the seven seas. This will be the only DC Extended Universe film of 2018, so a lot of hopes are riding on Aquaman. Now, Warner Bros. has finally released the first story details about Aquaman, and today’s Nerdist News is breaking them all down.

Join host and part-time mermaid, Jessica Chobot, as she dives into the description that sounds a lot like every other hero’s journey we’ve ever seen. You know the drill: it will be “the journey of his lifetime,” as Aquaman takes up a quest that will take him around the world as he experiences moments of self-discovery and proves that he’s worthy to be the king of Atlantis.

What’s so special about that? It’s going to be about the execution. Wan has stated that he’s going for a Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone vibe, which suggests that Amber Heard’s Mera will be more of a partner to Aquaman instead of simply his love interest. The newly released pics also show off some new looks at Black Manta and Ocean Master that clearly took their cues from their comic book counterparts.

Beyond action, Wan’s specialty is horror; and Aquaman may have its share of scares as well. The carnivorous sea-dwellers known as “the Trench” also appear to be in the film, and they’ve shown a willingness to attack, kill, and eat any humanoid race that isn’t their own. Think of them as humanoid piranhas, and you’ll get a better indication of how dangerous they can be.

What do you think about the pre-San Diego glimpse at Aquaman? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
