AQUAMAN Director James Wan Teases ‘Sea Monsters and Cool Creatures’

Now that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has hit the big screen, the road has been paved for DC’s other solo heroes and heroines to make the much anticipated leap. Wonder Woman, the Justice League, and even The Flash may be going first, but Aquaman is finally going to get his shot at pop culture redemption.

Geoff Johns, Peter David, and other comic book creators spent decades rehabilitating Aquaman’s image in DC’s comic book universe. For the Aquaman film, it’s up to director James Wan to make the general public see the true potential of the title character. According to Wan, he’s already got some fun things in mind for the movie.

“There’s always something kind of cool about Aquaman,” said Wan during an interview with /Film. “The idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That’s the thing about Aquaman that’s cool is he’s not an alien, right? He’s from our planet and he’s from a society that we’re not privy to in the context of the story. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.”

Aquaman has a lot of history fighting sea monsters in his comic book series. More recently, an underwater race known as the Trench was added to Aquaman’s enemies. We think they would make great onscreen adversaries for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Amber Heard’s Mera.
