Apple May Be Working on Their Own Smart Glasses

Google tried to take an early lead in the smart glasses game with Google Glass a couple years ago, but when they pulled their product off the market in early 2015, it was clear that the world wasn’t ready for augmented reality smart glasses. Either that, or Google just wasn’t ready to make them. Some time has passed between now and then—millennia in the tech world—and it looks like another tech giant is ready to take their own stab at smart glasses: Apple.

A new report from Bloomberg cites “people familiar with the matter” as saying that Apple is “weighing an expansion into digital glasses” that would be announced at the earliest in 2018. Apple has supposedly talked with suppliers about components, like near-eye displays, for their glasses, but not in large enough quantities to suggest that large-scale production is on the table right now.

Apple’s glasses would supposedly connect wirelessly with iPhones and show information from the phone, likely integrating with first- and third-party apps to do so. Tim Cook seems invested in the idea based on previous statements: “AR can be really great, and we have been and continue to invest a lot in this,” he said in July. “We are high on AR for the long run. We think there are great things for customers and a great commercial opportunity.”

In October, he also said that AR “is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there, but it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it, like we wonder how we lived without our phone today.”

Nerdist has reached out to Apple for comment and clarification, and will update this story with their response.
