ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Trailer Shows Very Big (and Very Small) Action

One of the most impressive things about Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man was its ability to play big and small at the same time… apropos, considering its main character’s size-shifting superpower. On the one hand, Ant-Man operated on a much smaller scale than most of its Marvel Cinematic Universe contemporaries do, following the exploits of a common thief (as opposed to a super-soldier or a demigod) facing off against a single megalomaniac (as opposed to an army of space robots or an entire shadow government) towards the end of winning back the love of his daughter (as opposed to saving all life on Earth as we know it). Then again, Ant-Man is also the first MCU movie to transcend physical dimensions and alter the very fabrics of quantum physics… so it’s also got some big tricks up its sleeve.

If we can glean anything from this first look at Ant-Man and the Wasp, it seems interested in maintaining the same balance. Yes, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) may be gearing up for another heap of action testing the bounds of scientific feasibility. But, per the mini-speech delivered by Scott’s young daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson) in this first trailer, the sequel doesn’t appear to be eschewing the personal element that helped to enrich things in the first go three years back.

Perhaps more excitingly, this glimpse of Ant-Man and the Wasp promises a lot that we didn’t get a chance to see in the 2015 outing: a proper taste of Giant-Man, whom we’ve thus far only seen by way of the character’s brief spot in Captain America: Civil War, Laurence Fishburne in his MCU debut, and, most importantly, some serious action for the Wasp herself. Evidently, she might be showing up her counterpart when it comes to the superhero game, and we’re jazzed to see it happen.
