We’ve been through this before, trying to explain Tintin to the uninitiated. And we’ve noted, upon the release of the first teaser trailer, that this CGI flick involves Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish, so the pedigree is hard to argue with. But they’ve released the full trailer for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and, well, you be the judge:
Some will like the look, but I would vote “creepy.” The Thompson Twins and Captain Haddock, in particular, look bizarre in three dimensions. And it’s still going to be a hard sell to North Americans who didn’t grow up with Tintin comics. Are you going to give this one a shot based on the people involved, even if you’re not a born Tintin fan?
I’ve read a bit of Tintin and I can’t wait to see the film!
What American accents? Pretty much everyone in the film is British and using some sort of British accent here.
I grew up with Tintin as well, if that adds any credence to me actually liking the look of it.
I’m a huge Tintin fan (I discovered him – and the equally superb Asterix – when I went to France with my family when I was 12) who’s longed for a good filmed interpretation of the stories…and it’s plainly obvious this ain’t it.
Oh sweet jebus, this looks terrible. Motion capture always stinks, and hearing Tintin characters in American accents with over the top John Williamsy orchestral sturm und drang is just wrong. Wrongwrongwrong. The Quantum of Wrongness. My candidate for the shouldabeen director? Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie, etc)…Did I mention how much motion capture stinks? Straight animation or live action, it’s an either/or. Motion capture is, in a nutshell, the worst of both.
I haven’t really been a Spielberg fan lately *ahem – Atomic bomb refrigerator surviving monkey swinging alien loving disaster, cough cough* – sorry something that just ruined my childhood was in my throat.
BUT!!!
Has anybody else noticed that their are actual guns(!) in this movie?! And not only that, but in one of the clips in the trailer the child-aged hero is actually wielding a pistol?!? That’s definitely a far cry from when Stevesy digitally removed anything resembling a gun from E.T. in the theatrical re-release.
All good Speilberg ish has had a mean streak to it, and maybe with this one his P.C.-don’t offend anybody-no more nazi days are finally behind him and he is returning to form?
Peter Jackson, Steven Moffat, I love you guys … but this looks mega uncanny.
I really hope that that’s the actual score of the movie at the end when the title comes in, cause it’s really coolio!!
Hopefully this’ll kick up another franchise, I’m really excited about this. With all those big names, this would be the ULTIMATE NAMEDROP!
i don’t think i can do it. i grew up on tintin, and for me a huge part of enjoying the stories is the style in which they’re drawn. very simple, clean, and expressive. uncanny valley aside, this just isn’t grabbing me the same way. i’m not ruling it out altogether, but i’m definitely not gonna jump to see it.
It looks visually amazing, but those familiar with the Uncanny Valley hypothesis will probably agree that the look of the CGI people will automatically revolt some people.

I know nothing about Tintin. But i do know the people involved and love all of their other works! I even like the look it. I’m for sure going to watch it!
To me, an American version of Tintin feels as weird as… if someone made a Russian version of Fawlty Towers? It’s just not right :b
Looks fun! I’ve never heard of Tintin, (sorry) but the trailer looks good and the people behined it are amazing. I’m more interested in it because of them.
I want to watch this so much! It does have a weird look to it seeing it in three dimension but the story is what I’m excited about!
Growing up in Portland OR, in the early 80’s, my local library had all the Tintin books and I read every single one. I will have to give it a go, if I can find it in 2-D. 🙂
It looks fine to me, and even if it didn’t I still wouldn’t write it off yet considering all the talent involved.
This looks like the only comic based film that I would bother to see.

Sure. With all that talent involved, it can’t be all bad. I’m always looking for fun movies to which I can take my son that don’t insult my intelligence.
That looks AMAZEBALLS!! I mean, it resides primarily in Mori’s Uncanny Valley but still, AMAZEBALLS!!!
