Andy Kubert Talks DC’s DARK MATTER and NEW CHALLENGERS (Exclusive)

DC Comics is going big with their latest project, Dark Matter. The lineup of titles is unreal, with books like Dark Nights: Metal by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, and The Silencers by Dan Abnett and John Romita Jr. leading a bold new direction for the publisher. These look like epic stories that focus on the sort of adventures that the comic medium does best.

Of the all awesome series announced, we’re most excited about New Challengers by Snyder and legendary artist Andy Kubert. The Challengers property is one of DC’s coolest untapped resources, so seeing it revived with Snyder and Kubert at the helm is beyond awesome. Kubert is a superb superhero artist and he’s known for his work on titles like Batman and Captain America. With New Challengers, Kubert is set to stretch some serious science fiction muscles, something he hasn’t done in quite some time. That alone is enough to get us to buy this book.

New Challengers and Sideways from DC Comics

Challengers of the Unknown was first brought to life in 1957 by the legendary Jack Kirby. Over the years, the property has been revamped and retooled by high profile creators like Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, and Howard Chaykin. We don’t know much about Challengers‘ new direction yet, but DC is promising new characters and new missions that honor the legacy and history of the original Challengers of the Unknown title.

We’re honored to debut this video interview with Andy Kubert, in which he discusses New Challengers, the Dark Matter project, and the lasting influence of his late father. Joe Kubert helped shaped comic books as we know them today. His work on books like Sgt. Rock and Tarzan inspired, and continue to inspire, countless artists throughout the industry. Andy Kubert is one of the best in the business and it’s clearly because he learned from one of the all-time greats. There’s a lot of cool stuff in the video, but the fact that Andy tells us that he’s drawing New Challengers on his father’s art desk is insanely cool.
