Android Users Join the Rest of Us, Can Now Get Current DC Comics Via Google Play

Two years after kicking off the first wave of their digital comics initiative, DC has announced that they’re finally releasing their current monthly titles via Google Play. While collected editions were available up until now through the digital storefront, the publisher hopes this will expand the audience for current ongoing titles across the main DC and Vertigo lines.

Essentially, this means that readers won’t have to go through ComiXology or even DC’s own Android app for their Action Comics fix, and it puts them a step ahead of Marvel.

However, don’t expect a major sea change here – this is merely a slight shift in the way readers can get their comics if they’re not already on one of the other digital services’ bandwagon. And it’s not clear whether one’s Google Play purchases can be viewed in native apps on other platforms (your DC and Comixology app collections carry over across devices).

The collection is live now on Google Play.

DC Entertainment, the #1 comic book publisher in the U.S. and home to iconic Super Heroes including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, announced today its current slate of monthly periodical comics are now available for download on Google Play. This expansion in distribution brings DC Comics and Vertigo titles to an even broader audience of digital readers and follows the release of DC Entertainment collected editions and graphic novels on Google Play in Fall 2013.

“DC Entertainment is committed to offering weekly and monthly periodicals to our readers on their preferred platform,” stated Senior Vice President of Vertigo and Integrated Publishing, Hank Kanalz. “Google Play is one of the biggest mobile content brands in the world and we are excited to offer bestselling titles from DC Comics and Vertigo to Google customers.”

Broad digital distribution has remained a cornerstone of DC Entertainment’s business, leading to extensive growth in both digital and print sales over the past three years as digital availability attracts new readers and comic fans alike. DC Entertainment has the widest digital distribution of any comic book publisher and was the first publisher to make its entire line available same-day digitally with the launch of DC Comics – The New 52 in Sept. 2011. That launch is widely seen as reinvigorating the comic book industry.

Visit Google Play in the U.S., with additional markets to follow, to download the latest periodicals, graphic novels and collected editions from DC Entertainment.
