André 3000 is Killin’ It in the JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE Trailer

André Benjamin — née 3000 in his Outkast days — has really got his Jimi Hendrix vibes on lock in the trailer for the latter’s biopic, Jimi: All Is By My Side. And judging by the pedigree behind it — the film’s writer/director is John Ridley whom you may know from being the screenwriter on a teensy-tiny film called 12 Years a Slave? — we’re fairly certain and hopeful that this will be a solid homage to one of music’s greatest icons.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive, career-spanning look at the artist, this will not be it. And if you’re looking for nothing more than a concert of Hendrix’s greatest hits, this will not be that. In fact the film doesn’t even have the rights to his music (though critics have stated that it doesn’t actually do the film any disservice, surprisingly enough.)

That said it does cover two of the most game-changing years in Hendrix’s career: that of 1966 – 1967, when he, at the time an unknown backup guitarist from New York’s Cheetah Club, made his way to London and eventually tore up their music scene.

An intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician as he sits, unknowingly, on the verge of becoming a rock legend, Jimi: All Is By My Side looks to showcase Hendrix’s heart and mind as it does his status as a legend (with some seriously impressive guitar playing skills. Because I mean, damn: the boy could play the shit out of a gee-tar).

Jimi: All Is By My Side also stars Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell, and Burn Gorman. It hits stateside theaters on September 26, 2014. Are you going to experience it? Tell us about it in the comments.

Sucks they couldn’t use Hendrix’s real music, but still looks amazing.
