It’s Devil’s Night at the Hotel Cortez, and if you’ve been keeping up with American Horror Story: Hotel, you know that probably isn’t a good thing. Luckily, however, it meant we got to see a ton of Evan Peters’ character Mr. March (the hotel’s original owner, and H.H. Holmes-esque murderer) this week. While Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett were notably missing, both AHS vet Lily Rabe and Freak Show’s John Carroll Lynch joined in on the festivities. On tonight’s episode of AHS, we learned more about Ms. Evers’ back story, saw Lowe dine with a bunch of famous serial killers, and watched the Countess add yet another person to her growing coven of vampires.

Though tonight’s episode of Hotel was still rather lengthy, it didn’t sport the bloat of it’s predecessors. Instead of running in a million directions, the show focused less on The Countess’ vampire shenanigans, and concentrated more on the hotel’s oldest residents, Mr. March and Ms Evers. When the owner made his debut a few weeks ago, we discovered that the linen-obsessed housekeeper had served as an accomplice of sorts, that is until March got caught, and they were forced to take their own lives.

It just so happens that back in 1925, Ms. Evers’ (first name: Hazel) son was taken from her while she wasn’t paying attention. But, once the cops discovered that it was in fact Gordon Stewart Northcott, the famed serial killer responsible for the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders (1926-1928), it was too late. Much like the original story, there is no trace of Hazel’s son left behind, aside from a bloody sheet. Ah, so her obsession with linens finally makes sense. While she was in a sheet cleaning frenzy, Joh Lowe knocked on her door (to investigate the blood that was dripping down the walls in his bedroom below) and listened to Hazel as she recounted their story. Before they could discuss the similarities between their losses, Hazel ran off to prepare for the party.

And oh, what a party it was. After finding images of Ms. Evers circa 1920’s at work and being understandably confused, John gave in and had a drink at the hotel. But, while he was at the bar, he bumped into Eileen Wuornos (Lily Rabe) and subsequently fought with her after she knocked him out and tied him to a chair. Just when Lowe thought he’d won by handcuffing her to a sink, Liz told him that she wouldn’t be there if the police showed up, because Mr. March takes care of his special guests, especially when they show up for his annual Devil’s Night shindig.

Despite the fact that he’s not a serial killer (as far as we know), Lowe was invited to March’s soiree. In addition to Aileen, Richard Ramirez, John Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and even the Zodiac Killer (who was criticized for wearing a mask and coming up w/ his own nickname) were all in attendance. Apparently, everyone at the table honed their murdering skills by visiting the Cortez and learning from the hotel’s master, Mr. March. Only the best of his pupils are invited to the party each year. It’s suspicious that John was invited, especially when you consider March’s remarks regarding how he’s been “watching” him. But, I have a feeling he’s the one responsible for the murders he’s been investigating.

While John was busy sipping absinthe with the serial killers club, his wife was busy trying to figure out what’s going on with their son Holden. As we’ve learned over the course of the show, one of the cruxes in Alex and John’s marriage is the fact that Holden was abducted on John’s watch. Much like Ms. Evers, the detective’s son was taken when he wasn’t paying attention. So, it made a lot of sense that after finally finding him again, Alex decided to take him home without telling anyone. It wasn’t until she found him drinking the blood from the family dog that she took him back to the hotel to figure out what was going on.

This lead to an encounter with the Countess, who recognized the bond Alex and Holden have. Using that relationship to her advantage, the Countess told Alex that she would turn her into a vampire (so she could be with her son forever), just as long as she worked for her. Though Alex rejected her initially, she came back and and agreed to her terms, and was turned. That brings the grand total of new vamps to three in the past few weeks.
