The cast for AMC’s adaptation Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s seminal DC Comics/Vertigo comics series Preacher has added yet another member to the principal cast. British actor Joseph Gilgun is now officially on board as Irish badass vampire Cassidy. Gilgun joins Agents of SHIELD’s Ruth Neggas as Tulip, and Ian Colletti as Eugene Root, better known as Arseface. Dominic Cooper, best known to fans as Tony Stark’s father Howard Stark in Captain America and Agent Carter, is heavily rumored to be playing the lead part of Jesse Custer, but hasn’t signed the dotted line just yet. Preacher is being produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for AMC and Sony Television. (Interestingly enough, DC’s parent company Warner Brothers doesn’t seem to be involved at all.)
In the official description for the show, Jesse Custer [is] “a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.” That sounds very much like the premise of the comic series, so fans should breathe a sigh of relief that it doesn’t look like the TV version is going to stray too far from the books.
Proinsias Cassidy is maybe the fan favorite character from the original comic book series, a 100 year old vampire who is just as addicted to drugs and alcohol and other forms of bad behavior as he is blood. A creature of pure ID, he was often given the best and most memorable moments in the original comic’s five year run.
Even though he’s been appearing in British television for several years now, Preacher would only be Joseph Gilgun’s second acting job in a U.S. production, after co-starring with Vin Diesel in the upcoming movie The Last Witch Hunter.Â

Best casting call EVER
It’s aisfits reunion on the show

Holy shit! Yes yes yes! Gilgun is bloody brilliant in everything he does! I absolutely cannot wait for this 😀
He’s a good choice, I’m still scratching my head on the rest of the cast though. Clearly I’m limited in imagination, that or the rest of the cast isn’t right for their respective parts. Only time will tell I suppose, but it’s not like I have a say in this. I wont’ watch any of it until I hear how it is after a few episodes though, I’m not confident in the rest of the cast enough to let them ruin what is one of the most perfect comics of the last 20 years.
OWWW, Thats so awesome. I would have loved to see him as The Joker or Mr. Zaszz but this will be bad ass & puts a lot of reassurance into this tv version of The Preacher.
While I’m not familiar with his work, he certainly has the right look for the part.
I love this guy, he pretty much carried Misfits along the last two series after the original cast left for whatever reason they had to leave for.
