Holy magnificent bargains! Yes, you read that right: Amazon Prime members will now receive 20% off on all pre-ordered and newly released video games. This appears to be a permanent incentive and will be applied automatically to the accounts of any existing members with a Prime Subscription. The discount will only apply to physical titles and select collector’s editions bundles that are purchased directly through Amazon. Console bundles and games purchased through third-party vendors will not receive this benefit.
Amazon clarified that the new release window falls within the first two weeks after a title’s official street date. This gives folks a little time to gauge any feedback from early adopters of the games they’re looking to purchase. On paper, this looks like a great deal, but let’s do a little number munching to get a sense for Prime’s true value, shall we?
This 20% off perk will slash about $12 off any full price $60 game. Purchasing nine $60 titles will pay for your subscription, and that’s without including the great value you’re getting with the Amazon Instant Video streaming service (worth it for Transparent alone), the excellent shipping options, and the remaining Prime incentives. I personally was already sold when I found out I could have video games delivered to my doorstep on launch day. This new incentive bolsters Prime’s plethora of existing offerings, putting it a peg above other retailers’ subscription-based offerings (Best Buy Gamer’s Club, Gamestop Powerup Rewards).
Do you plan to hop on the Amazon Prime bandwagon anytime soon? Are you already a Prime member who’s planning to buy all of your games through them moving forward? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
