Immortality Looks Horrific in Netflix’s New Sci-fi Series, ALTERED CARBON

2018 is just around the corner, but Netflix is already looking even further into the future with its upcoming sci-fi series, Altered Carbon. The show is based upon the cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan, which envisions a world in which death can easily be overcome by the rich and powerful who have their memories inserted into fresh bodies. The newly released trailer for Altered Carbon starts off as a commercial for the service that turns death “into a mere inconvenience” before introducing Joel Kinnaman‘s main character and a few NSFW images and scenes from the ten episode series.

Via Entertainment Weekly, we know that Kinnaman’s character, Takeshi Kovacs, was an assassin turned revolutionary whose initial body will be portrayed by Will Yun Lee. A few centuries after his death, Kovacs finds himself reborn in his Kinnaman-looking body and given a chance to earn his freedom by solving the murder attempt on Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), one of the wealthiest men in the world.

The trailer does touch upon one of the major downsides of immortality, as Kovacs notes that “you forget to fear death.” And not everyone in the future is on board with the idea of living forever. Along with the intriguing themes, the visuals for the series adaptation are simply stunning. EW suggests that this may be one of Netflix’s most expensive shows to date. If that means that Altered Carbon will give us another cinematic experience on television, then we’re all for it.

Altered Carbon will be released on Friday, February 2, 2018 on Netflix.
