All Vertigo Comic Book Movies Move to New Line Cinema

Warner Bros. has made no secret of its ambitious plans to produce several DC Comics film adaptations in the next few years. Now Vertigo Comics may finally get the same attention from another movie studio.

According to a new report, New Line Cinema has assumed control over all of the Vertigo Comics properties so that sister studio, Warner Bros. can concentrate on  Justice League, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Suicide Squad and the rest of the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe.

This could mean that the long-in-development adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman may kick off New Line’s Vertigo films. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been attached as the director and star of Sandman for two years, with The Dark Knight trilogy screenwriter David S. Goyer slated to write it.

Vertigo has been a largely untapped resource for Warner Bros. despite a rich assortment of creator owned titles including Fables, Y: The Last Man, Transmetropolitan, We3, and 100 Bullets. The Vertigo comics line has also been the home of mature readers comic book series featuring Swamp Thing, Hellblazer (Constantine), Lucifer, and Black Orchid.

The classic Vertigo comic book, Preacher was ordered to series at AMC earlier this year, while Fox picked up The Sandman spinoff, Lucifer last spring. It’s not clear if New Line’s control over the Vertigo properties extends to the realm of television. But there are so many Vertigo titles worthy of adaptation that TV may actually be the best available format for some of them.
