Alison Brie’s ’80s Wrestling Netflix Series GLOW Gets a New Trailer

If you were a kid back in the late ’80s, then you knew that Saturday mornings really got cool when the cartoons ended and one of two things came on: Soul Train (first and foremost) and G.L.O.W. – The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Back when G.L.O.W. was in its heyday, professional wrestling was ruling the land, producing icons like Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior, among dozens of others. G.L.O.W. was created as a cash-in to that wrestling craze by B-movie director Matt Climber.

As the former husband of ’50s sex symbol Jayne Mansfield, knew a little something about the appeal of larger-than-life women. He combined big hair and big personalities and mixed in wrestling and comedy, and a new phenomenon was born. The show ran for four seasons from 1986-1990.

Now the producers of Orange is the New Black are bringing a fictionalized version of the story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling to Netflix with a new 10 episode series starring Community and Mad Men star Alison Brie. Brie will play an unemployed actress, struggling to make it in 1980s Hollywood, who winds up being one of the “wrestlers” on the first season of G.L.O.W. Comedian and podcaster Marc Maron will play the former B-movie director who created the show, no doubt inspired by Matt Climber. You can check out the first full trailer for GLOW down below:

Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix:

“Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life turns out not to be what it seems. At the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling super stardom.”

GLOW drops its 10 episode first season on Netflix on June 23.
