FX Orders Tech Thriller DEVS From ANNIHILATION, EX MACHINA Team

If you found yourself obsessing over sci-fi film thrillers Annihilation and Ex Machina after you saw them in theaters or rented them at home, then we’re calling it now: FX’s new series is going to be your new favorite show … because it comes from the minds of absolute filmmaking geniuses who brought you those pieces of cinematic perfection.

Sci-fi tech thriller Devs starring Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno is the new project hailing from award-winning writer/director Alex Garland, who is teaming up with his Annihilation and Ex Machina collaborators Eli Bush and Scott Rudin. FX announced the pickup for the limited series at the 2018 Summer Television Critics Association press tour early Friday morning. Previously developed as a pilot, the new eight-episode series will also star Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Alison Pill. Garland, Bush, and Rudin will executive produce the series along with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA TV.

Devs tells the story of young computer engineer Lily Chan (Mizuno), who investigates the secretive development division of her employer Amaya, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, who she believes are behind the murder of her boyfriend Jamie (Ha), a gifted cyber security specialist. Offerman will play “Forest,” the CEO of Amaya, whose obsession is the covert work of the company’s development division. His second-in-command Katie (Pill) is a gifted quantum physicist. And in her efforts to get to the bottom of the mystery, Lily will come up against the terse, dry and dangerous Kenton (Grenier), the head of security at Amaya.

Rounding out the cast of characters is Henderson’s Stewart, a cultured intellectual from another era and one of the top technical minds working in Amaya’s secret development division, along with Spaeny’s Lyndon, a young, brilliant, and stubborn employee who works in Amaya’s secret development division.

According to FX head of TV John Landgraf, Garland isn’t just a name attached to the project; the filmmaker is going to be extremely hands-on for the entire first season of Devs, both in development and production. “He has written all of the scripts and is committed to directing all of the episodes,” Landgraf told the room of reporters and critics. “After reading all eight scripts and hearing Alex’s brilliant vision, it was an easy decision to order Devs to series. Devs has locked in a diverse cast. The series begins production this month and will premiere on FX next year.”

We’re pretty excited to see anything from Garland after the one-two punch of Ex Machina and Annihilation, and now hearing that his next project is a weekly sci-fi thriller, Devs has shot to the top of our must-watch list. It’s basically going to be a new eight-hour installation of his work, and seeing what he did in about two hours for Ex Machina and Annihilation, there’s no telling just how he’s going to f-k with our minds on TV. Devs will premiere in 2019 on FX.
