A lot has changed in twenty years, but one thing that has remained constant is our societyâs utter failure to understand the definition of âirony.â So it was only fitting for Alanis Morissette to sing an updated version of her hit song âIronicâ, a modern version inspired by the internet-age, with the same flawed understanding of what makes something a little too ironic.
Last night Morissette joined James Corden on The Late Late Show, and the two sang a duet with updated lyrics for an updated world.
An old friend
Sends you a Facebook request
You only find out theyâre racist
After you accept
The song also touched upon Waze, Uber, Amazon, Netflix, and the lack of any female late night hosts.
It’s free office cake
On the first day of your diet
Itâs like they announce a new iPhone
The day after you buy it
Morissette has been out promoting the release of a special 20th anniversary edition of her mega-hit album, Jagged Little Pill. Feel free to feel as old as I do at the fact that album is 20 years old.
Itâs like swiping left
On your future soulmate
Itâs a Snapchat
That you wish you had saved
Itâs a funny tweet
That nobody faves
Make sure you listen to the rest of the song because itâs really funny, and yes, they do make fun of the lack of irony in a song about irony. Twenty years in and weâre still getting value out of that joke.
