About two and a half years ago, Thunderbitch, which consists of Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard and members of Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Masks, were robbed at gunpoint by two “skinny little” teenage boys while sitting on a porch in Nashville. They were unharmed and not much money was surrendered. Later that evening, the band went out for drinks at a Whigs concert. With that in mind, Thunderbitch’s bio on their website shows the group has ultimate self-awareness: “Thunderbitch. Rock ‘n’ Roll. The end.”
Things are looking up, because the band is now streaming their raucous self-titled debut album, which you can check out on their website, buy on iTunes, or purchase on vinyl here. Thunderbitch is by no means a departure from the straight-forward southern rock of Alabama Shakes, although there is definitely a stronger punk influence for which Howard’s gravelly-yet-anthemic vocals are ideal. Let’s not forget how prolific Howard has been this year: Alabama Shakes released Sound & Color in January and now there’s Thunderbitch, but neither project sounds out of breath.
Sadly, there are no firm live dates for Thunderbitch at the moment, although their website does offer a semi-hopeful “Maybe someday….?” in their Tour section. The good news is that Alabama Shakes are currently traveling the country, and you can find out when they’ll be near you here.
