AHS Hotel Recap: ‘She Wants Revenge’

American Horror Story has been doing this weird thing this season where, just after main characters get some decent screen time, they disappear for an episode or two. We’ve seen this happen with Donovan, the vampire kids, Ramona, Sally, and to some extent, March. In this week’s episode “She Wants Revenge” for instance, John Lowe completely fell off the face of the planet–which is curious considering the previous episode focused on the revelation that he’s the “10 Commandments” Killer, but also not a bad thing because let’s face it, he’s my least favorite character in the show. As a result, Hotel has felt disjointed and all over the place. Sure, a lot of the characters are great, but it feels like a lot of the plot points that have been introduced have fallen by the wayside.

Despite dropping the whole John is a killer thing during the latest episode, several other stories we’ve been wondering about were addressed this week. First and foremost, we found out why it took Ramona so long to seek revenge on the Countess. We also followed up with the horde of Vampire children that Alex had inadvertently created, saw the Countess reunite with a couple of past love interests, and witnessed Iris satiate her ravenous hunger by attacking a couple of porn stars. On top of all of that, the Countess got married, and showed more of her human side. With that being said, let’s dig in.

With The Countess planning her wedding to Will Drake this week, Ramona’s vengeance plan took center stage. When Donovan came to her house to talk about the plan to take down the Countess, she explained why it had taken her over 20 years to set the plan in motion. Because they were in the same heartbroken boat, Donovan couldn’t understand why she didn’t act out immediately. Apparently, after being kicked to the curb all those years ago, Ramona went to visit her parents. After seeing the condition they were in, she decided to stay and take care of them.

Not long after Ramona’s mother passed, her father’s dementia continued to worsen and put him in several dangerous situations (i.e. getting lost in his home town). When it brought him to the edge of death, Ramona brought him back via turning him. Aside from being alive, however, her father was still struggling with his disorder. Though the dementia was still there, the virus stopped it from progressing any more. Saddened by this, Ramona stayed by his side for the next 20 years, keeping him fed and entertained until she finally put him out of misery, and left the house.

As for the youngest vamps on the block, we first heard about them again when they were mentioned on the news. Later on during this week’s episode, Alex went out to the home where the kids were hanging out. There was a pile of dead bodies surrounding them, while members of the group were suffering from measles again. Apparently, transferring blood with the virus in it, to others successfully created a league of bloodsuckers, with the caveat that they’d also suffer from the disease when they were running low on blood–which is horrifying if you ask me. Anyways, when Alex told them that the police would be on to them because they’d killed a pizza delivery boy (which linked law enforcement to the location) and offered them a place to stay at the Cortez, the crew flat out refused and decided to do their own thing instead.

In between planning her wedding and wrapping Donovan around her little finger again, the Countess also reunited Rudolpho Valentino, and planned to live happily ever after with him once she became Will Drake’s widow. I was surprised to see Dono back in bed with her, especially after he’d been planning to take her out alongside Ramona and Iris. At first I thought he was playing her to get close, but his true colors were shown when he stopped Ramona from killing her, and threw her in a torture cage. Despite his own mother telling him that the Countess was going to kill him, it was too late. He was under her spell again.

That’s not the only warning given this week, as Ms. Evers also warned Will Drake to be wary of the lady of the house as well. But, he too was head over heels and the small wedding went off without a hitch. Though she’d planned to off her new husband in Paris, the Countess sped up the process when she heard Drake calling her baby a monster. After that, she threw him in the same area where Ramona was being kept. Still caged, Ramona tricked Will into letting her out, then killed and fed on him only to realize that she was trapped (in the same hallway where Natascha and Valentino were kept all those years), while the Countess watched it all unfold on a security camera.
