I spent most of the day Thursday at CES stuck in presentations and panels, and there’s really nothing I can tell you about those that would be all that illuminating. If you’ve seen one sterile gray conference room with a panel of talking heads, you’ve seen ’em all.
Yes, that’s Internet sweetheart Veronica Belmont with a panel of… wait, I don’t actually remember what it was about. Oh, yeah, it was about apps. Everything was about apps. Apps galore. Veronica did a fine job moderating, but a panel’s a panel, and I’ve been on panels and moderated panels and they all pretty much merge into one giant panel in my mind.
I sat in a bunch of these things and really wanted to go wander the exhibit floor, but there wasn’t much time. I did finally get to do that for a few minutes between panels, though, and the moment you walk into one of the halls, you remember why you’re there:
I don’t even like 3D TV, but when you put a zillion flat panels on a wall, I’ll put on the damn glasses without complaint. That’s what I wish my living room looked like.
NBC Universal has a booth, too. I have no idea what they’re doing in it — I gathered they’re promoting games based on SyFy shows or something — but they have cameras and flat panels and TV studio-style lights and a pseudo-control room and cameras, so I just jump to the conclusion that cool things are happening there. Doesn’t matter whether that’s true or not. I wonder if they’ll change once Kabletown (“with a K”) takes over.
Audiovox had this:
I have no idea what the deal is here. I don’t know why you’d want a TV in the back seat of a yellow Mustang convertible. I do know that I had the strange feeling that I would very much like to drive this particular model home. The idea of showing movies and TV shows — no, not porn, I don’t want to get arrested — on the back of a Mustang while driving across the Mojave Desert makes no sense, yet I would do it in a heartbeat. Hey, fellow motorists, wanna watch some “Phineas and Ferb,” or a Lakers game? Right here. Leave at least three car lengths between us, please.
And what about my native industry, radio? It’s barely here. They’re still pushing the failed HD Radio concept, and they have a booth that, mostly devoid of visitors and with three cars parked in the middle surrounded by less-than-helpful representatives and booth workers, resembles the Saddest Car Dealership In The World, like an Oldsmobile dealership in the waning days. But the most fitting part is this:
It’s behind a pillar. Just… perfect.
I’m hoping to get to spend a few hours Friday looking for cool stuff. If I do, I’ll post it here. If not, Chris is finding stuff for G4, so check “AOTS” for that. Here’s a sample; he’s clearly having a LOT more fun than I am here:
