ADVENTURE TIME, ATTACK ON TITAN Win Big at the Harvey Awards

KaBoom’s ongoing Adventure Time comic and Kodansha’s Attack on Titan English-language adaptation were two of the big winners at this weekend’s Harvey Awards at Baltimore Comic-Con. Adventure Time picked up prizes for Special Award for Humor in Comics and Best Original Graphic Publication for Younger Readers for writer Ryan North and publisher KaBoom! respectively, while Attack on Titan beat out the likes of Sunny and the fourth volume of hitman comic The Killer for the Best American Edition of Foreign Material prize.

I’ll run the full list of winners below, but it looks like the Harveys ballots tilted largely in favor of the major indies like Dark Horse (which took home five awards) and Image (the biggest winner with six awards for its creator-owned comics), while Marvel was able to sneak in two wins – one for best inker (congratulations, Wade Von Grawbadger for All-New X-Men), and Best Single Issue or Story for Matt Fraction’s “Pizza is My Business” in Hawkeye #11. DC was completely shut out with one nomination for best inker and zero wins.

Paul Pope was the big winner, taking home the Best Cartoonist award for Battling Boy (and if you know Pope’s work, you know that’s a well-deserved win), while Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan won Best Artist and Best Writer respectively for Saga at Image. And industry workhorse/superhuman talent Dave Stewart won Best Colorist for Hellboy: The Midnight Circus.
