In the world of fan-builds, Adam Savage is proving on a regular basis that he is king. His One Day Build videos on the Tested YouTube channel have become a place to learn all sorts of maker techniques from probably the most visible expert in the field. Each episode is an education in technique, tool use, and realizing anything can be created if you set your mind to it.
In his latest build, he shows us how to be Ka-chic on Kashyyyk with a custom leather Wookiee bandolier. While his shop has a fair amount of tools that we might not necessarily have on hand, the build looks completely doable for a die-hard Star Wars fan looking to make a battle-ready Chewie fashion accessory. Savage starts with some rigid polyurethane blocks for the small bandolier boxes and custom cut and formed aluminum for the large ones. (OK, we take back “completely doable” since that bit might involve calling around to other makers who may have a metal brake.) He then walks us through some leather work as he makes the bandolier straps and purse. Yeah, it’s a purse.
What’s particularly great about this episode are the two unexpected lessons. Adam makes it a point to share his measurements with us so we can make the same bandolier if we wanted to. However, even with his precise specifications, one of the straps has to be re-done, thus teaching us to be ready to make proper measurements on our own. And since that whole strap had to be remade, Adam’s tip to always have extra hardware, buttons, rivets, etc… on-hand is crucial advice.
What do you think of this build? Are you going to make your own? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
