Adam Savage Built a 1,000-Shot Nerf Gun

By his own admission, Adam Savage is a huge Nerf fan and an admirer of the Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K, a high capacity Nerf gun that can shoot up to 100 high-impact rounds in a row. However, Savage’s latest one-day build for Tested attempted to improve upon the Rival by greatly increasing the capacity to 1,000 shots. But first, Savage took the time to appreciate the firing mechanism that makes the Rival work.

The first task at hand was to determine the size of the magazine to hold the 1,000 shots, and Savage’s initial estimate was slightly off. Midway through the process, Savage expected to use a dual magazine design. However, Savage ultimately chose to go with a single curved magazine for aesthetic purposes.

After Savage had a working model, he went back and made visual improvements on his Nerf gun. While working on this project, Savage also reminisced about his days at ILM when he and other effects artists kitbashed models to create spaceships. (Savage brought it up because he was kitbashing the gun at the time.)

Once the build was complete, Savage took his new toy to try it out against a few willing volunteers dressed as dinosaurs. It was kind of a surreal scene as Savage blasted them with Nerf pellets, only to ask for a break because the weight of the gun quickly exhausted his arm. But it still looks amazingly fun to play with.
