Adam Sandler’s Heartfelt Tribute to David Letterman

These days, the name Adam Sandler brings to mind his recent tendencies to make movies around where he wants to go on vacation (50 First Dates and Blended). It’s only after we’ve pushed past his recent flops and reminded ourselves of how many great things he’s brought us that we realize we might sometimes be too hard on him. This musical tribute to David Letterman will go down as one of those great things.

This heartfelt tribute to the last pillar in late-night royalty is just what we needed to remember not only the legacy Letterman leaves behind, but that Sandler has still got it.

David Letterman has been the host of The Late Show with David Letterman for over 30 years, and leaves behind a career that–one could argue–has helped almost everyone working in show business today. While Kimmel and Fallon have made an undeniable impact on late night shows, they still have a long way to go for Letterman status. Understand, I thought about the following statement, and if you’re honest with yourself, you’ll agree that David Letterman really has become the Johnny Carson of the last few decades. Actors, musicians, and comedians have him to thank for keeping late night TV alive for all these years, and in this video you can really tell Adam Sandler means every word he sings.

Whether it’s poking fun at the Leno/Letterman drama, over-sharing about the effect Dave has on Sandler’s mom, or reminding us that Sandler himself was a child when Letterman came on the scene–each verse is equal parts funny and heartfelt. Despite the excitement we feel for Stephen Colbert taking over later this year, Letterman’s final show is May 20th and we’re sure sad to see him go. If his leaving has any silver lining, it just might be this glimpse of the old school Sandler we grew up loving.
